I'm sure you all know how brilliant Blackfield are, having bought their albums and seen them live. No? You missed it? Well you lucky bleeders, today is your lucky day, isn't it. Because when Steve Wilson and Aviv Geffin took their band out on the road earlier this year, someone had the foresight to record one of the damn dates. Unfortunately not the wonderful night at the Boerderij, nor the exceptional Mean Fiddler gig. But nevermind cos this show, at the Bowery Ballroom in New York looks like it was a good one too.
The complete set is shown here, from opener Once through final encore Cloudy Now, via all of their second album, most of their first, and a surprise from the Cover Versions series. So we've established that the band played a corker, but what's the DVD like?
Firstly, the camera work is very organic as you'd expect from someone like Lasse Hoile, no crane mounted swoops for him.. The use of handhelds give it an almost bootleg feel in places. Each band member seems to get an appropriate amount of airspace, so you Tomer Z groupies wont be disappointed. Sonically it all sounds good with just a couple of overdubs bolted on to tidy some off bits up.. The 5.1 mix will probably have you creaming but as I'm still waiting for donations I'll probably never know!
The extra's on the DVD include a photo gallery for the ladies, and the promotional videos for Pain, Hello and Blackfield.
With Steve Wilson reportedly taking a year out, this seems the only way to see the Blackfield experience for a long while.

Comment by GUEST on 2008-05-22 17:35:17 Hey Charlie, don't want to be nitpicking, but one song from the 2nd album is ommited and it unfortunately was that way for most of the tour. I'm only mentioning that because it's none other than the lovely This Killer, probably the most prog song on the album due to the 7/8 verses and sylvianesque chord sequence in the chorus. Cheers mate, 4chords |
