Some bands like to wear their influences on their sleeves. The Watch, however, have made costumes out of theirs. This bunch of laid-back Italians are unashamedly fans of Genesis, and over their previous albums have set about recreating the sound and spirit of the 1970s Progressive masters. Planet Earth? is choc full of classic prog touches albeit with a modern edge.
Clocking in at a little over 45 minutes, it's good to see a band concentrating on producing quality rather than quantity. The seven tracks here all come on, do their bit, and toddle off without over staying their welcome. A skill that quite a few other bands could do with learning.
stand out tracks are the opener Welcome To Your Life, Something Wrong amd New Normal, the latter a short three minuter that features flute work from John Hackett.
The band play their parts well, Giorgio Gabriel's guitar-work is exceptional, while Valerio De Vittorio keyboards evoke a bygone era. On top of all that, vocalist Simone Rossetti sounds more like Peter Gabriel that Peter Gabriel does.
I, for one, am glad that there are bands such as The Watch who are not only content with keeping the old spirit alive, but are actually recreating it before our very eyes.
