The Reasoning - Adverse Camber
Written by Ash Brown

The Reasoning - Adverse Camber

After releasing two excellent albums in Awakening and Dark Angel, 2010 finds The Reasoning taking stock somewhat. A line up change (the addition of Maria Owen, Tony Turrel and Jake Bradford-Sharp on vocals, keyboards and drums respectively) and the release of two shorter albums (of which Adverse Camber is the first) sees the band laying down solid foundations for their push towards the upper echelons of the prog world.

The album starts off with Diamonds and Leather, which sees the band refining their sound. On this track, as on most of the album, the vocal duties are mainly being handled by Rachel Cohen, with Dylan Thompson and Maria Owen providing the backing. The Nobody Effect follows up, with its driving guitar intro, slipping into a mellower groove. Not that it stays in any groove for long, always changing and keeping you on your ears, which gives it the feeling of being much longer than its seven minutes.

The third track, The Thirteenth Hour also motors along, never giving the listener a chance to drift away. Through The Now sees Dylan and Rachel sharing vocal duties, over another twisting track, smothered generously in guitar parts. Then comes the quieter and gentler Script-Switch Trigger, which is my favourite track on offer here. Tony Turrel keyboards underline Rachels haunting vocals in the first section, before the rest of the band chime in.

The album closes with 14, which is the heaviest track, and features some dark and menacing vocals from Rachel. The lyrics say "Take me in a new direction". But will they? This album is certainly not as heavy as Awakening or Dark Angel, and the next album, Acoustically Speaking is, by all accounts, acoustic, but they band still stay doing what they do best

So, to recap, this is another good album by the band. Not groundbreaking, but then, I guess it was never meant to be!
