I've waited a long time for The Pineapple Thief to live up to their early promise, shown on the Vulgar Unicorn record. I thought that maybe 2008's Tightly Unwound would be their breakthrough, but ultimately that album just didn't quite cut it.
But I think that with Someone Here Is Missing, Bruce Soord and his fellow Yeovillans may just have cracked it. Indeed, this album is the bands best body of work, still drawing on their influences (Porcupine Tree for one), whilst building on the elements of their own sound.
From the opening track Nothing At Best to the closer So We Row, this album finds a band that has grown immeasurably over the last couple of years. Highlights for me are the "Porcupine Tree meets NIN" opener Nothing At Best, the "Lazarus-ish" Barely Breathing and Show a Little Love, but in reality there's not a bad track here.
The band also seem to have found their spiritual home on Kscope, a label that loves the intelligent and thought provoking post-prog scene. The labels backing means that this album sounds superior to their previous efforts, while Storm Thorgerson's artwork also once again deserves high praise.
If you've not stepped into the The Pineapple Thief world yet, then now is the right time to take that first stride.
