Trying to trace the history of the legendary "CAKE AIRBASKET" is a very difficult business. The band never give interviews, so some of the information is a bit sketchy, but we think that they started life as "HAM" while still at school, and recorded their debut single, "EAT THE WELSH", on the self financed "WELSH BASTARDS" label, which sadly went into liquidation after the record pressing plant was burnt down by WELSH NATIONALISTS. The single sold in very small quantities, and is now almost impossible to locate. (WE AT SILHOBIT RECOMMEND ADVERTISING IN RECORD COLLECTOR).

If you can find a copy, expect to pay upwards of £200 for it, as it is one of the rarest singles released by "HAM" in the seventies. The line up at this time was STIG EVERLY on (drums), DIRK EVERLY on (guitar and vocals) and LOLLY VAN DYER on (bass)

This line up recorded the album "BIZZA THE HEEN", on COLD RECORDS in 1973 and toured Wales. The album is now regarded by many people as the archetypal PROGRESSIVE ROCK album of that decade, and has sold over half a million world wide. As a result of this it even made number one in the INDEPENDENT PROGRESSIVE ROCK ALBUM CHART, in Iceland for 3 weeks. Which led to "HAM" headlining the "REYKJAVIK FESTIVAL OF SYMPHONIC ROCK" in front of 86,000 people, and supported by GENESIS, ELP, KING CRIMSON, YES and VANDERGRAFF GENERATOR.

Back in England, the band toured extesively, but broke up in 1976 virtually blown apart by the intensity of the work. After they split, the EVERLY brothers went on to form an early incarnation of "SILMARILLION" with DERK DICKHEAD, and nothing more was heard of them.

LOLLY VAN DYER became a monk and joined a Monestry near Norwich, and disappeared from the world of PROGRESSIVE ROCK until 1981 when he turned up playing drums for a band called THE RODE KRUE. This band split up after a year, after a spectacular on stage fight at the MARQUEE CLUB in London between the singer FIFI LE BEEF and LOLLY VAN DYER. All we know of MR BEEF is that he works part time in a dry cleaning company, SKETCHLEY's. This band had potential, but never recorded anything.

After a short time as backing vocalist to BONEY M and THE ARCHIES, LOLLY VAN DYER reformed "HAM" with FANCY FRED HOGRIL on (drums) and big JAMES HEADCASE on (guitar and vocals). They played only one gig before splitting up and immediately reforming as CAKE AIRBASKET. After a year spent giging extesively in Iceland, Wales and Southampton the band released an album "KEVIN FROM MARS", on POLYMER records. The album reached number 1 in Iceland yet again, and record receipts were made in Pakistan and Nepal of all places. Again regarded as a landmark album by many people.

The band has continued to record throughout the 80's, releasing a further 3 lps all in Icelandic language. This year 1991 they played their first gig in England for 10 years, at the JAYDIS convention in the New Forest. It was deemed a great success by the 2,000 or so people in attandence, with the premiering material from their soon to be released cassette album in the Welsh language:- "COGHWERTYN TWYTHN MOGIER" which literally means Help!. This album will be the bands first completely instrumental lp, from what my sources say doesn't at all sound like MARILLION.

CAKE AIRBASKET continue to turn out revolutionary PROGRESSIVE ROCK, and are surely one of the most important bands of our ale.
