Mick Pointer Band Rating:
reviewed by Charlie O' |
Mick
Pointer left Marillion nearly six years ago, because he felt that the
band couldn't keep time with his drumming. Since then be has rarely been
out of the spotlight. Now he has released his latest offering, "Jack and the
Progressive
Beanstalk". This
is the follow tip to his highly successful debut album "Sunset
Voyage". Musically
it is less cluttered, probably due to the fact that it was produced by
the superb Kline Raarter (who has previously worked with Cake Air Basket
and Ultraworld).
Mick
Pointer has now proved to his critics that not only is he a great
drummer, but his voice is grate too. The
new album is a concept, based on the children’s story, "Jack and
the Beanstalk". The title track, "Jack Tries To Sell The
Cow", is very atmospheric, starting off with a simple beat, bass, Melotron and mooing noises from a cow. It
builds up nicely into the second song titled "Magic Beans of
Scorn", which tells the story of Jacks poor mother throwing the
beans out of the window, after Jack tells her he has swapped their cow
for a handful of beans. The song is very emotional proving that Mick
Pointer is a great songwriter, lyricist, drummer and a talented singer
too. The final track on this album shows us that Mick knows how to give the punters what they want. He gives us strange time signatures. He gives us keyboard solos. He gives us melotron. But most of all he gives us PROGRESSIVE ROCK MUSIC. All in all, this is a good album and should give him the success he deserves. A must for all lovers of great music. |
