Welcome
back to an old feature where we write about the releases on the fringes
of the Prog Scene that the decerning Prog Picker might consider worthy
of a listen.
GORKY'S
ZYGOTIC MYNCI - BWYD TIME (CD)
Welsh band thankfully nothing like the dreadful Ezra. They have been
picking up some positive press in the music weekly's to the extent that
Bwyd Time has appeared in the Top 50 Albums of the Year. As their
name might suggest this is a band verging on the weird, with half the
songs on the album being sung in Welsh. The very up beat ‘Lechyd Da'
being reminiscent of Runrig at their peak. Though the best work is done
on the slower, moodier pieces borrowed from very early Genesis, also I
am informed Todd Rundgren influences are at work.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - For
the brave, or true progressive rockers.
FROG
– DAISY
EP
(Cassette)
One
of Britain’s best Prog bands returns with a very spacy/trippy two
track cassette sounding like a cross between Ozric Tentacles, and a
dubbed up Twelfth Night. If you like Porcupine Tree then try these boys
they are great.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - The
best £2 you could spend
SKYCLAD
- IRRATIONAL ANTHEMS (CD)
More
of the same from the pagan powered heavy rockers. Once described as
Marillion playing thrash. The lead singer includes "Script For A
Jesters Tear" as one of his fav albums. At their best Skyclad can
match any of the best metal bands, but they do not seem able to maintain
this consistency over a whole album.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - For
the committed.
THE
QUEST –DO YOU BELIEVE (CD)
Having
seen these lads supporting Magnum in impressive fashion. it was pleasing
to find their debut CD being up to the standard of their live
performance. They are more in the Saga/AOR furrow of Prog's field, but
none the worse for that. A new album will be released later this year.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - Better
than Bon Jovi, but like FM will never be successful because they are
British - Shameful
IN
AURA – THIS MONTH'S EPIC (CD
Single)
‘As
Polaroid’, their superb debut CD single on Org Records, made Sean, and
Marina rich. One name change, one major recording contract, and
strangely a one track CD single. Bollocks we cry. We want VFM, and this
is not it. In fairness the tracks OK, but not as good as the
Polaroid stuff
.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - A
new single will be out now, so until hearing that judgement is
suspended.
STOP
PRESS The
new single “Soap
Opera” is a fantastic buy buy!
SLEEPY
PEOPLE – HANGER/HOME IS WHERE THE TELLY IS (7”
Single)
Great
cover, alas the music does not quite match for these ears adleast, but
if you like Poisoned Electrick Head check them out, as it jumps here,
and jumps there.
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - Sleepy
People will not play for the Classic Rock Society (good or bad - you
decide).
BANG
BANG MACHINE - AMPHIBIAN (CD)
Second
album from Evesham female fronted rockers Bang Bang Machine. Take some
All About Eve less the folk influences, early U2 when they knew how to
make a noise, and you have a rough idea what to expect. Standout tracks
"Requiem of Silence", "Tough Delilah", and latest
single "Show Me Your Pain".
SILHOBBIT
VERDICT - Watch
the bargain bins because sadly this is where these troops
product seems to end, just to prove there is no justice in the World.
