Review Porcupine
Tree
Rating 4/5 reviewed by Rimsk Scaffoletti |
About
four years ago Silhobbit 'discovered' Porcupine
Tree,
although by then they had already done about five albums and a couple
of tours. The band's line up includes two ex-Japan members and
main-man Steve
Wilson
is currently working with Fish.
Now they are a fully established band and certainly the only
British prog band capable of making the big time. They've done two
live Radio One
sessions, gigs in America
and support slots with Marillion.
They've made friends with NME,
Sounds,
and even Kerrang!
I don't think that there is anyone who would disagree that these boys
have a new style of Progressive music that is in a league of
its own. They've released about five singles now, and each time
they get aired on the radio there are more converts. This one is more commercial than the single
Moonloop and their record company
are doing a lot to promote it.
Waiting
- Phase One is radio friendly, brilliantly produced, and even has something that
Oasis
fans would like. It begins with light percussion, guitar strumming,
and vocals, and then the bass and drums enter. The song is very catchy
and you can't help but tap your feet, and sing along. Steve
Wilson's
vocals and guitar are indeed very good. To keep the out and out
proggers happy the song links into the next one,
Waiting
- Phase Two,
which is an
instrumental in true Porcupine
Tree
style. The 3rd track -
The Sound of No-one Listening, is more
like the long Prog/Floyd
bits that we all loved from
The Sky Moves Sideways album.
There are some excellent spacey guitar and keyboard sounds in this
space-rock epic. Porcupine
Tree
are going to be at The
Classic Rock Society's
weekend festival, so make sure that you get into the finest band in
prog before the gig! Rating 4/5 Most Excellent. Buy it and put Prog back on the map! |
