Kino

The previously controversial Claus Lienen has sent us his review of Kino & Steve Thorne's recent gig in Aschaffenburg, Germany. You can read it here

Arena

It appears that we "over jumped the gun" when we claimed that Arena are to split!

Instead it has been stated that they are "taking an extremely long hiatus and that we have no plans for the foreseeable future".

Silhobbit.com are pleased to announce that the band are still technically together but don't expect anything from the band for a long while. Clive has a new project, John has his hands in a few pies, Mick has also denied that he is the part-owner in a new restaurant / bistro and needs to devote time to his new business venture.

X-Factor

This years X-factor (crap Pop Idol type thing, for all you foreigners) has been a bit progressive, if you hadn't noticed. Or so we've been told.

Not only was former-Landmarq vocalist Moon knocked out in the preliminary rounds, but it also seems that the winner, Shane Wotsit, will be singing a song written by none other than FROST person Jem Godfrey. The track, It's My Goat or something, was written last year, and there won't be a prog version on Frost's Milliontown album. Hopefully.

Saint or Sinner?
Martin Orford

The IQ/Jadis keyboarder and keen Southampton FC supporter wants Peter Crouch back! Martin told Silhobbit.com "Peter is a fantastic player and will light up Anfield". Martin will travel up to Watford to watch them play the Saints on Boxing Day, Silhobbit.com can exclusively reveal yesterday.

Watford is less than ten miles away from from the massive explosion that destroyed Hemel Hempstead killing hundreds of people and damaging buildings and pubs.

Hemel Hempstead

The fire may be out, but widespread looting is rife as poverty stricken people rampage through the streets in search of food, medical supplies and DVD recorders.

The Mayor of Hemel has declared the area a "disaster zone" and pleaded for "calmness".

The massive explosion (over a week ago) was the biggest ever in Europe and can still be heard in Australia and New Zealand! Tens of thousands of people are still without water, shelter and Sky Sports.

The Marlowes Centre, last Thursday

Arena

The word on the street is that top proggers Arena have decided to call it a day after ten years, and ten studio albums under their belts. Mick and John decided that they had taken the band as far as they could and Clive also wants to concentrate on other projects. But Silhobbit.com reckon that they'll probably rear their heads again and popup playing the occasional festival.

Singer Rob is to become a father soon and Ian Salmon has written some children's stories which he hopes with be published next year.

Best wishes to Arena and the dozens of excellent musicians who have played in the band over the years. They will not be forgotten, their place in prog history assured.

Gouveia Art Rock Festival

Ex Disciple Matthew Parmenter has been announced as the opening act on the second day of this increasingly popular festival, which will take place on the 8th & 9th of April.

See www.gaudela.net/gr for more facts and figures.

Porcupine Tree

Just a small update to the news on Steven Wilson's homepage (www.swhq.co.uk). There are a lot of upcoming releases by the Porcupine Tree frontman Steven Wilson. Steve also informed our reporter LittleThommie that one new release was not mentioned at the website. It is a recording of his school and church performences of Christmas songs. These recordings date back when Steven was about 6 years old. There will be a limited edition with a 5.1 surround mix. This CD will be released under the name: Christmas Tree

So something to look forward to.

Marillion

We found this story on the BBC recently. Tsunami Disaster Fabrication. Even we couldn't make this shit up!

The Electric Company

Yankee Proggers The Electric Company have two new songs available for download. Second Insight and Lost are only demos. but can be downloaded from the MUSIC page on their website www.theelectriccompanyband.com

Fireball in the Sky - your Stories 4

Nibbsy from Hemel writes:

"Me and my friends missed the Porcupine Tree gig at Cambridge due to this explosion. We where looking forward to this gig and where hugely disappointed to miss it.

I live about half a mile from Buncefield Depot and thankfully suffered no damage or injuries.

However, the plumes of smoke caused chaos on the roads. It took over an hour to just drive to St Albans, and with all the major roads closed we just gave up on going to the gig.

We have heard that they will be returning to Cambridge next year so we will Have to wait until then."

Wilson - Does he care?

Silhobbit says: Maybe Steve Wilson will do a benefit gig for the poor people of his hometown, many of whom missed the concert. At which, it is reported, no mention of this atrocity was made. How soon they forget!

Jowitt - Firestarter?

Fireball in the Sky - your Stories 3

LittleThommie writes:

What a great disaster, everyone wants to know how it could happen. Well, John Jowitt (IQ, Jadis, The Nudies) messaged us:

"I like walking in the nude so a little fire in the winter is always very beneficial to my old cold bones. But this great fire I had not in mind, just a small one would do. I am very sorry that it got out of control, I was just adding a bit of petrol to dried branches, rubbed a few pieces of wood together (very quick). That was the last I can remember. When I woke up lots of noise and heat (surely this has to be hell) and lots of strange looking guys (which appeared to be firemen). They put me on a stretcher, and I wondered if I still was dreaming. A policeman then arrested me for running (or sleeping) naked.

Luckily nobody suspects me, for the fire, just £50 (fine) for not wearing clothes. So no nudity for me anymore, not even on stage."

We thank John for this revealing story and wish him all the best. And John, no playing with fire again, otherwise there will be no oil left in the future.

Fireball in the Sky - your Stories 2

Lee Abraham (Galahad) writes:

"I woke on Sunday to the awful news of the blast. Thankfully no-one has been killed as a result although as I made my way downstairs on Sunday to hear the news unfolding on TV, in my haste I slipped on the last step and slightly twisted my ankle which made me let out a slight "eeeaaaooooww". After 30 seconds or so the discomfort passed and I was able to carry on life as Galahad's new bass player fairly normally, the band were pleased to hear; but the threat of that "final step" has now been highlighted to me and my family.

Something good has now come from this disaster, I have erected a small "DANGER - Take Care" sign at the bottom of my staircase. Safety first!"

When asked to speculate upon the cause of the disaster, whether his recent spat with F-R-O-S-T-Y guy Jem Godfrey, Lee elaborated thusly "Perhaps its to do with the Milliontown front cover artwork which depicts a "glowing" figure about to enter what looks like a petrol storage facility!!! Is Godfrey predicting the future??"

Well, you decide!

Frappr Map

Yes, we screwed up last week with our pretty lame attempt at getting something a bit technical on this site. However, after only getting a handful of people joining, we realised that somebody here at Silhobbit had fucked up on the map. So I've sorted it out now, good'n'proper.

Add yourselves to our map by going to www.frappr.com/silhobbit. And tell all of your mates too!

Now it's working!!!

Fireball in the Sky - your Stories 1

Jane from Surrey writes:

"What a palavar! Living in Surrey, I wasn't really affected by the explosion but I did wake up around 6.00am to go to the loo - coincidence? I think not! Stories that may be circulating that say the reason for this was my mass consumption of beer at the IQ gig are of course ridiculous.
I have a friend in Abbots Langley, when I phoned him this morning to check he was OK, he told me the blast blew his loft door down. He actually had to get up to close it again. We think his house insurance may cover this non scheduled bit of DIY."

IQ - Just Changing Hands (for a couple of notes, guv)?

Progressive thieves were out in force on Saturday night, following IQ's sold-out Mean Fiddler drag show. IQ regular Polly had her Pockets picked and a valuable camcorder, featuring an hour of Prog-filled nonsense, otherwise known as the IQ gig, was taken.

At the same time, or maybe a bit later or earlier, French Sophie, who had travelled over from France for the gig, had her camera and money stolen! So, if you work in a Kodak lab, or similar, keep your eyes peeled for suspicious looking characters appearing on photo's.

Pickpocket at work! (right)

But most seriously, at some point in the evening, in the George pub down the road, some little urchin pilfered my BOUGHT copy if IQ LIVE FROM LONDON which I hadn't even opened, let alone watched!

If anyone knows anything about the disapearance of the above items, don't get in touch with Crimestoppers, but email us here anonomously at news@silhobbit.com and we'll get in touch with the owners.

Genesis In The Cage

The Genesis covers band, Genesis In The Cage will be performing at the Playhouse Theatre in Whitstable, Kent on March 5 2006.

The band also have a DVD for sale from their website at www.inthecage.co.uk . The 40 minute DVD contains the video backdrop that the boys use on stage, which is of them performing Watcher Of The Skies, Ripples and Suppers Ready, but put through the distorted mixer vision of surrealist video artist Andrew Hanson

Porcupine Tree

Porcupine Tree set alight a 'crammed to the rafters' London show yesterday playing an unusual set including rare b-side gems Buying New Soul and So Called Friend. The roof was raised on the Shepherds Bush Empire, in Shepherds Bush when they ended with the classic Radio Toy.

Many big names in prog were seen including Jadis's drummer Cheese Pasty (who can be seen silhouetted in the foreground), John Wetton, and Steve Hogarth.

Steve Hughes and Cheese Pasty

It is not often that two Coastproggin' drummers shave off their pubic-hair for charity to raise money for Southampton Donkey Sanctuary. They bravely shaved each other to a packed 'Bowman' pub and donated a cheque for £400.

Martin Orford declined to comment

Steve Christy

The Jadis's drummer has been in Silhobbit's news three times. A record for any progger on this website.

Clean shaven Steve Christy is unable to comment

Glass Hammer

Another prog band cashing-in, Kino-like on Christmas, are Glass Hammer. They'll be releasing a new album, but only via Apple's Satanic iTunes. The album, featuring the 20 minute "never-before-heard epic" At The Court Of Alkinoos, as well as a live version of Time Marches On and their cover of Airborne by Camel.

Silhobbit reckons it's a shame that these songs will only ever be released in Apples lossy and compressed format, suitable only for headphone listening on the Tube.

Landmarq

Stockbroker proggers Landmarq will finally release their virgin DVD, Turbulance, early next year. The DVD, containing a gig filmed recently in Poland as well as a bargain bucket load of bonus material (including some rare archive recordings and video of Landmarq past and present, a large photo gallery, band interview, biographies and various other items of interest) will be released through Metal Mind Productions. No actual release date has been set though it is expected early in the new year.

Additionally, a new studio album is also still in production with the band busy working on new material for this release.

Roger meets Kylie

Here the promised report (send by sms) of the meeting between Roger (Steve Wilson's brother) and Kylie.(Dannii Minogue's sister)

Merry Christmas boys!

"Pouch-Hopping is greaaaaaaaaat especially with Kylie" said Roger. He also send a few pictures with it.

Roger said "I asked her if I could Hop with her and she said that that would be ok, but she would not go into my pouch."

Roger again: "She said she is doing great after her disease and was looking forward to release a new album soon".

Hmm, it seems every good thing is followed by a bad thing.

Last message Roger send : "Maybe I will go to the African desert next, Australia seems to be over populated.Maybe some ostrich riding there."

Well, I wish him all the best on his new discoveries.

Littlethommie, exclusive on Silhobbit

Red Lounge Records

The latest releases from Red Lounge Records are:

Orkustra
"The best, most important, unreleased at the time, historical and lost west coast psychedelic recordings ever." Orkustra featured Kenneth Anger, Charles Manson's mate Bobby Beausoleil and "It's A Beautiful Day" geezer David La Flame. Described as the missing link between Avant-garde and Hippy, as well as Middle Eastern influenced hippy acid psychadeliasmith.

Mistress - New Ground

Mask

Mask is a collaboration between innovative singer, Sonja Kristina (Curved Air, Acid Folk), and ambient cellist/violinist/producer, Marvin Ayres (Mille Plateaux).

Mask mix improvisation with seductive songs and beats, fusing elements of Ambient/Electronica, Trance and Classical music to breathtaking effect. Their performances interweave with projections of beautiful filmic imagery and visual atmospherics, providing an immersive and spellbinding dimension to their music. They are collaborating with audio-visual artist Outerbongolia, the filmic contributor to Coldcut and Pirate TV, and the visionary artist, Davide de Angelis, whose work includes designs for David Bowie’s cds Earthling and Outside, and the successful Bowie Web.

Mask’s debut album ‘Heavy Petal, the tenebrous odyssey of Jack and Virginia’ and the complimentary DVD ‘Healing Senses’ reveal Mask's cathartic journey from the subterranean to the exquisite, whilst De Angelis' sensually layered and evocative artwork coupled with Outerbongolia’s films resonate perfectly with Mask's ethereal sound.

Frost

Recording of Frost's debut album Milliontown hits a setback as Jem Godfrey breaks two ribs in an "incident" in Kings Cross on Monday night. Don't worry girls, he's ok apart from that, but feeling a bit tender round the middle. Check out the Frost website at www.f-r-o-s-t.com or even Jem's personal, and sometimes painful blog at www.planetfrost.blogspot.com. It's a cracking good read, both deadly serious and rib-ticklingly funny silmultaniously!

This break, ho ho, in recording has enabled Jem to catch up on I'm A Celebrity... and he tells us that he quite fancies his bands namesake Jenny (left) to scoop the big prize. "I've seen her in action and I know that girl has got exactly what it takes to suckceed. And the rumours about her are true" he confided foolishly.

Clive Nolan

Clive Nolan has written in to us to say that, unlike Pendragon mates Nick Barrett, Pete Gee and Fudge Smith, he has absolutely no interest in ITV's I'm a Celebrity. He, and the rest of the Arena boys are, however, deeply engrossed in Channel Four's Lost series and thinks that it would make a great concept album.

Steve Wilson's Brother

From time to time Roger finds time to send messages, this time by phone (SMS). He wrote: "I am still exploring my horizons, and I came across a new Aussie craze , called : Pouch-hopping. This is great fun and everybody seems to be doing it, strange this isn't popular in England (yeah strange Roger). "

Roger added (send ) a few pictures with the messages.

Roger further: "If it was a hype in England it probably would be banned by the Tony Blair's New Labour, although he has been pouch-hopping with his wife Cherie Bleurgh a lot the last few years."

3rd and last message : "I have been thinking .Next week I will be visiting Kylie Ann Minogue, who's luckily been recovering from her illness."

We are happy to hear Roger has been thinking and are looking forward to next week (maybe a few pictures again?).

I'm A Celebrity

Tangent main man Andy Green emailed us this week to say that him and the rest of the band are routing for Tanned Gent Dave Dickson in the hit ITV series. Andy told us that the Cheap as Chips Bobby Dazzler cliché machine rocked their boat, but they were disgusted with Carol Thatcher's antics so far. "It was bad enough in the 80's when her mum shat on the miners, now she's pissing on the TV! What the hell has Paula Radcliffe started now?"

Prog Stars!!! Email us your thoughts here at news@silhobbit.com

The Tangent

The recording of the latest Tangent studio album is now complete and is intended for release in February 2006. Entitled A Place In The Queue the album is a lengthy piece, (79 minutes) and a kind of equivalent to the old style Double Album even though it occupies a single CD. Early copies will feature a bonus CD featuring 3 otherwise unreleased tracks (including a studio recording of the song Forsaken Cathedrals which the band were touring earlier this year), some out-takes, demos and general experimentation. The two CD version will be released in a lavish Digipack cover, with an open -out extra artwork feature by Ed Unitsky.

The Track List is as follows:
  1. In Earnest - (Tillison) 20.03
  2. Lost In London - (Tillison/Manning) 8.08
  3. DIY Surgery - (Travis/Middleton) 2.16
  4. GPS Culture - (Tillison) 10.07
  5. Follow Your Leaders - (Tillison) 9.21
  6. The Sun In My Eyes - (Tillison) 3.44
  7. A Place In The Queue - (Tillison/Travis) 25.19

Total playing Time 79.00 - “A double album on a single CD"

The Tangent Website will shortly be undergoing a major overhaul to mark this event, and there will be samples available to download when that happens.

Galahad

Reports have reached our eyes stating that Hampshire musician Lee Abraham has joined Galahad.  Our source tells us that Lee said:

"I have joined UK proggers Galahad as their new bass player!

Galahad have been in existence since the mid 1980's, releasing some 8 or 9 albums with various labels. They are currently on their own label Avalon with distribution via Voiceprint.

They recently parted with their bass player and I saw the vacancy advertised on the net. I answered the ad, met them last week, was given 2 songs to learn (both total 20 minutes!), I auditioned this afternoon (Sunday), and.......... I'm in!

Our new album is written and half recorded at Thin Ice (Karl Groom/Clive Nolan's studio) with Karl as engineer. I have to learn/write the bass lines over the coming weeks, record at Thin Ice and we are planning a tour around Europe during 2006 to include Holland and Belgium (Spirit of 66 is on the cards by all accounts!)

What a wirlwind (sic) week its been, in fact what a few months its been!! I can't believe that a few short weeks ago I was sat in a crappy office staring out the window wishing for a more exciting and fulfiling (sic) career! I really can't get my head round it. As I said to the drummer earlier as we were packing up "I can't believe I will be recording with Karl Groom and touring europe with you guys!"

Lee Abraham - "You're in" - did he mishear?

He replied "believe it mate....... you're in!"

Thought I'd share my great news with my friends.

Lee "

Lee's fourth solo album View From The Bridge is getting a Silhobbit review soon

Magenta

Magenta's awaited DVD, The Gathering, is now in stock at www.progrock.co.uk  . The DVD contains a 110-minute concert plus some short extras. The concert footage is amazing, using 6 different cameras, and the audio is available as both stereo and 5.1 surround. NTSC format and region free, meaning it will be compatible with almost all players.

Magenta's next gig is at The Point in Cardiff on the 20th January 2006, so this is the only way to see the band for two months.

The band are also putting the finishing touches to their next album, Home, and hope to have it released on the 1st March 2006, with live dates in support throughout the year.
