Coralspin

Nottinghamshire band Coralspin are on the lookout for a new drummer after their current drummer Symon decided that it was time to step down from the drum stool. Increasing work commitments in North Yorkshire coupled with the complexity of the bands new material left him feeling that he wouldn't be able to put in the work required, especially as he has nowhere to practise his drumming outside of rehearsals.

The Resonance Association

Karma Pilot member Daniel Vincent teams up with guitarist Dominic Hemy to release their debut The Resonance Association album, Failure Of The Grand Design this October. Clocking in at just under 55 minutes, Failure Of The Grand Design consists of nine songs, including a new version of live favourite Electrolyte.

The prototype techno-goth-prog crossover album covers all of the bases sonically: from the ambience of Magnetophon and The Darkening Forest and the electronic glitchtronica of God Is In Tiny Boxes to the powerful guitar drones of Three Hundred And Sixty Degree View and the melodic guitar battering that is I Have Seen The Future, And I Am Not In It.

Burning Shed's leader Peter Chilvers has called Failure of the Grand Design their "best work to date".

Check out the band's MySpace page to hear what it's all about at www.myspace.com/theresonanceassociation.

The album will be on sale at the duo's next gig, at The Peel, in Kingston on October 20th, when they will be supporting US prog legends Glass and clever mathematicians Sphere3. It will also be available from the wonderful people at Burning Shed.

Fish - Marillion

Sunday the 26th August saw a special gig take place in Aylesbury. The Hobble on the Cobbles 2007 was headlined by our own, and former Aylesbury resident Fish. The big man played an hour and a half set, featuring tracks from his forthcoming 13th Star album, as well as a smattering of Clutching at Straws tunes, for it it that album's 20th anniversary. Damn, I feel old.

Anyway, for the encore, he wheeled out former band mates Steve Rothery, Mark Kelly, Ian Mosley and Pete Trewavas who then procededed to bounce their way through a special rendition of Market Square Heroes!

You can read the full review here and see some short vid clips here and here too!

The Magenta Baja Documentary DVD is also in at the shop, though only in PAL format.

Blind Ego / Pallas

Scottish proggers Pallas have been forced to cancel their scheduled London gig on Sunday September 2nd due to "poor advance ticket sales"

Support comes from local Croydon female-fronted-prog-metal-goth band Into The Woods

Poor Lillian

You've got to feel sorry for poor Lillian Stride. The 99 year old's 100th birthday was thrown into chaos and ruination by the so-called Royal Mail, who refused to deliver a special birthday package to her house, because it was 16 pence sort on stampage, though they did pay a Mail Operative to deliver a £1.00 penalty notice to her. House-bound Lillian was FORCED to WALK to the local sorting office through the POURING RAIN to pick up the surprise parcel from her older brother, who lives in luxury in Bognor Regis.

However, brave Lillian has nothing but praise for one postman though, who helped her to get back up after a fall recently.

Summer's End

Due to a change of record company, Hungarian band The Yesterdays will not be playing at this years Summer's End festival. Galahad

Coast proggers Galahad feature in this months Record Collector magazine, along with a dodgy photo of the band - is there any other type, we wonder?

But the bands publicity for their new Empires Never Last album doesn't end there, oh no it doesn't mate! They also have a track, cunningly entitled Empires Never Last, on this months Classic Rock Magazine's freebie CD, which is in the shops today!

The band are playing at the Summer's End pre-festival gig, with Jump, on Friday 14th September, at the Little Civic in Wolves

Orford leaves IQ

Yes folks, it's true. After years of rumours, Martin Orford has finally announced that he will be quitting chart topping act IQ this year.

"I'm leaving the band to concentrate on my bludgeoning solo career" he probably would have said to Silhobbit "I love the band still, and hope they go on to better and betterer thing without me, though I doubt it" he didn't say.

Marvin's last gig with the band will be on the 16th September in Montreal. The dates in November and December will go on, with a new keyboard player.

If you're interested, email the band at iqkeyboards@hotmail.com . Don't delay, email today!

Genesis

Well, as some of you are aware, Genesis are currently out on tour!

We've got an excellent review of their gig in Chorzow, Poland on Saturday 21st, sent in by our Polish pal 4Chords. Read it by clicking here.

And check out 4Chords myspace page at www.myspace.com/4ctmam While you're there, check out Polish band Lavender at www.myspace.com/lavenderpoland

Touchstone

“Well, after 10 gruelling days in the mighty fine studio that is Outhouse Studio in Reading, I'm very pleased to say that we have finished recording our debut album, Discordant Dreams. It was a great achievement by all of us - and very importantly, the ultra slick and clever Bad Boi Benny the engineer, to have actually managed to get everything done in the timescales involved - but we were well prepared and everything went very smoothly. It was fantastic being there for the duration of the recording and listening to the songs taking their shapes, and there were comical and technical highlights from everyone during their recording performances but special mention goes to Elkie who was actually recording with a band for the first time, has only been in the band for 3 months and has delivered some absolutely beautiful, gripping vocals.

The tracks that we have recorded and that will appear on the album are: Discordant Dreams, Curious Angel, See the Light, Being Hannah, Shadow, Ocean Down, Winter, Black Tide, Dignity and The Beggars' Song.

Mixing will take place in just over a week's time, mastering will be completed on July 7th and the final running time will be about 60 minutes - so, please allocate an hour of listening time for Monday September 10th, pre-order the album via www.touchstonemusic.co.uk so that you receive it as soon as it is released and enjoy what we have done !!"

Touchstone will be supporting The Reasoning at the First Floor Club in Derby on 8th September and at something called the KidsCoRock Festival in Aylesbury Home Of Prog on the 9th September.

John Beck

A cafe owner at Fat Cath's Cafe in Doncaster was shocked when she scraped a slice of burnt toast for a customer only to reveal a shocking image of the It Bites keyboard player John Beck.

"I couldn't believe my eyes at the close resemblance to John Beck, it is a mirace." clamed Fat Cath, "You can clearly make out his eyes and mouth" she added.

The slice of toast has been stored in a freezer until experts have examined it.

Galahad

A message from Stu

"After a very long and protracted gestation Empires Never Last is now available to the masses in all its glory, complete with stunning if somewhat dark art work which suits the nature of the music and lyrics down to a tee methinks!!!!

In the UK it is distributed by Plastic Head but the good news is for the web heads out there that it should be also be available from numerous mail order web sites including Amazon, Play, 101CD etc as well as being available in downloadable format on i-tunes.

Don't forget we have a gig on Sunday 22 July at the Thomas Tripp Late and Live in Christchurch, Dorset, which is our spiritual home!! The excellent Steve Thorne will also be making an appearance as a very special guest.

We are also playing at the pre-Summers End Festival Party on Friday 14 September at the Little Civic Theatre in Wolverhampton UK along with Jump, whom we played with many years ago at the legendary Whitchurch Festival."

Chris Benoit

Wrestling WWE Superstar Chris Beniot has been found dead at his home in Fayetteville, Georgia by police.

Benoit failed to appear both at Saturday’s live event in Beaumont, Texas, and WWE’s Vengeance: Night of Champions in Houston Sunday night, after informing WWE of a family emergency. WAGA, a FOX-owned and operated television station in Atlanta, reported that investigators believe Benoit killed his wife and 7-year-old son over the weekend, then himself on Monday.

Prog musician Jem Godfrey is "in a state of shock" and Steven Wilson's brother Roger is "devastated".

5th Projekt

Canadian band 5th Projekt will be playing a special concert at Canada's most famous castle, Casa Loma in Toronto. The concert will form part of the release party for the final instalment in the Harry Potter septology, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. 5th Projekt's debut album CiRCADiAN was released last year on their own Organik Rekords and features the haunting voice of Tara Rice along with the guitar work of Skodt D McNalty with Peter Broadley and Scott Honsberger on bass n drums.

Check them out at www.5thprojekt.com and www.myspace.com/5thprojekt

Reviews

Ok it's time for a bit of a catch up... Jump recently played at the Oakwood Centre for the Classic Rock Society, along with Spock's Beard. Well, you can read Ash Brown's lamentably late review of the gig here.

And Manc proggers Strangefish brought their own brand of Prog Mayhem to the Peel in Kingston recently. Charlie's review, c'est ici

Summer's End

British Prog-metal-proggers Threshold have been added to this years Summer's End festival line up. Threshold will be the second band on the Sunday night, coming on before headliners It Bites and after Christina Magenta who will be making her solo debut, playing songs from her forthcoming solo album, along with a few "classics".

The Sunday afternoon slots are filled by headliners, the newly reformed Solstice with Hungarian proggers Yesterdays and ex-Enid's Nick May's Whimwise.

Saturday night's headliners are Swedish prog-metallers Pain Of Salvation ably supported by Also Eden, and an as-yet unannounced acoustic act (to replace the "prior-engagemented" Caamora), while the afternoon's entertainment kicks off with the superb Tinyfish, continuing with Germans Abarax and climaxing with Karnataka!

Also this year, there will be a Friday Night Pre Festival Party Gig Thing held at the Little Civic in Wolverhampton. Entertaining the troops there will be Coastproggers Galahad and Chiltern-proggers Jump!

Tickets for the main event (which of course takes place at The Robin, Bilston on September 15th & 16th) and Friday 14th are available from www.sonicbond.com

Crimson Sky

Bristol proggers Crimson Sky have recruited a new singer. Her name is Sarah Warrington, and she says "I am 28, female, redhead, blue eyes, gorgeous, intelligent and witty... did I mention I'm modest too?"

She also bakes a mean Christmas cake!

The band are still on the lookout for a shit-hot drummer, so if you fit the bill, contact the band at their MySpace page

Black Widow

Legendary Proggers Black Widow will will be releasing a live DVD through Mystic records this autumn. The DVD which is called "Demons Of The Night Gather To See Black Widow" was filmed at the legendary German TV show Beat Club in 1970 and the film includes the full "Sacrifice" album era Black Magic show.

Extras on the DVD include a live audio bootleg recording from a concert in Italy in 1971, and an unreleased version of Mary Clarke.

The band have also started work on their comeback album, tentatively called "Sleeping With Demons"

John Dexter Jones adds...

Oh and just for the bleedin' record I spent 1986 in a band called Rutterkin with a certain Francis Lickerish... We even played a gig at Conwy Castle... Home of Welsh prog and quite frankly we were BRILLIANT...

Francis still owes me two pints and a packet of pork scratchings which were part of my personal rider. Who knows I might collect them at a gig near you soon...

And Francis... If ya read this... It's a BIG bag of scratchings

Secret Green

Thanks to Mike Hobson for pointing out that I'd incorrectly renamed Francis Lickerish's new band. Their proper name is Secret Green, not Secret Garden as I said yesterday. Their correct MySpace page is www.myspace.com/secretgreen. Obviously!

Sorry for the confusion, but I hoped you enjoyed the looking at the least updated MySpace page this side of Robert Sebastian one.

And I'd tried so hard to spell Francis's name correctly!

Tankus The Henge

Charlie may not have made it up to Scotland to see It Bites this weekend, nor did he fall for the commercial trapping's of Marillion's brace of Forum shows.

Instead he braved the wilds of Kings Cross to catch up'n'coming young kids Tankus the Henge perform at The Water Rats Theatre.

And you can read the review here!

Whimwise

Fresh from their recent Jump support slot at The Peel in Kingston, Whimwise featuring ex-Enidite Nick May along with keyboard wizard Gonzalo Carrera, vocalist Alquimia, violinist Ami Wilson and drum stud Steve Hughes, have been added to this years Glastonbury Festival line-up, at short notice.

Find out more at www.myspace.com/whimwise

Blind Ego

Anglo/German proggers Blind Ego, featuring members of RPWL and Arena have added another date to their short tour of the UK. In addition to the two previously announced dates where along with Kramer, they'll be supporting Pallas - at the Oakwood Centre in Rotherham on September 1st and at The Dome in London on September 2nd, they'll also be doing a headline show at the increasingly popular haunt, Riff's Music Bar in Hook, down by Swindon. This is on Friday the 31st August. Riff's is known to get a few prog luminaries through it's doors from time to time. such as Nick Barrett, Mark Colton from Credo and others.

For you Germans out there, the band are also appearing at Abseits in Freising on the 13th July, and the next day at the Art-Rock festival in Reichenbach.

Meanwhile below...

RPWL are working on their fifth studio album, but to keep us all occupied, they plan to release a special limited edition album, featuring live tracks, and RPWL members solo songs, but performed by the band.

The Enid

Well, not actually the The Enid, but three of the original members of The Enid, Francis Lickerish, Willie Gilmour and Neil Kavanagh have formed Secret Garden (see www.myspace.com/secretgarden) along with Andy Tillison, Jon Beedle, Hilary Palmer and John Howells.

The band are currently working on their first album, Songs To Wake The King, and will be playing at the Arundel Arts Festival in Arundel on September 2nd, where they hope to play some old Enid tunes alongside their new compositions.

Support comes from Silhobbit fave Mike Hobson and tickets are £8 (£6 concessions)

Jump

Buckinghamshire proggers Jump play their annual Horses Head Soup festigig this coming Saturday the 23rd June. This years event has moved from the usual Hairy Bottom or somewhere to the Limelight Theatre, in Aylesbury Home of Prog.

Supporting will be Something Pretty from Nottingham, as well as the wonderful Manchester based Strangefish.

Doors and windows open at 6:30, with Strangefish onstage at 7:15 sharp!

Oh, and John Dexter Jones says...

"This week I have mostly been listening to Shirley Bassey cos she's doing a Never the Bride song and I did Stairway to Heaven with them in a gig in Crewe. (It was for charity...that's why I did it...honest...)"

Fish

Sad news comes in from the Fish camp. Fish's marriage to Mostly Autumn's Heather Findlay is officially off, citing "musical differences". This means that she will not now be appearing on his new album, nor will Odin's Dragonfly be supporting. However, Chris Johnson and Gavin Griffiths will still play on 13th Star and feature in the touring band.

Read the full statement here

Pallas

Scot-Proggers Pallas have confirmed that they'll be playing three dates across the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in August and September.

In addition to the already released Rotherham Oakwood on September 1st and London The Dome on the 2nd (support on these nights coming from the excellent Blind Ego and Kramer), Pallas will be playing at King Tut's in Glasgow on Friday August 31st supported by fellow jocks Abel Ganz.

This medley can either be streamed or downloaded as an mp3. The Last Of The Libertine will be released in July on the Cyclops label.

Sunday 15 July - The Pitz, Milton Keynes (1pm Afternoon swim'n'show)
Wednesday 25 July - The Robin, Bilston (with Tinyfish)
Saturday 4 August - The Peel, Kingston (with Mother Black Cap Fish)

Reviews

Well yet again, my arse has been gotten off of, and Dial's excellent "Synchronized" album has finally been given a good going over. You can read the definitive, not derivative, review here.

John Dexter Jones says...

"This week I have been listening to Strangefish because someone said they sound like something I'd like... and they do.

We did The Beard y'know... they were ok but their tour manager forgot the batteries...."

Yeah, boyo! We heard that you lot rocked Rotherham to it's very core. You can catch Jump at The Peel in Kingston next weekend on Saturday 25th May, when they'll be playing with Nick May's Whimwise

Crimson Sky - Sits Vac

Crimson Sky requires a Female Vocalist and Drummer (male or female). Crimson Sky are a Bristol based Rock Band. We write and play only our own music. Crimson Sky have a quite a big presence in the Prog Rock world, and our music is played on many radio stations the world over, thanks to the internet. We have also had airplay on BBC radio including Radio 1. We have two quite successful CD's under our belt "Only Love" CD/EP and our new CD Single "Seasons End".

You can hear some music from these CD's here; www.mleamon.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk  and www.myspace.com/crimsonskybristol

We play at various venues including many local Bristol pubs as well as further afield, our last gig was at the Somerset Prog Festival with The Pineapple Thief and Magenta, (last Sunday 13/05/07), we have also played with well known Prog bands such as Darwin's Radio and Credo. We are currently recording our debut album, so whoever joins will be recording with us. It's very important that whoever applies for the above positions is dedicated, although everybody in the band has day jobs, we still have to make the time to be able to build on making Crimson Sky a bigger success than it already is. On average we practice once a week and gig about twice a month. Age is not important, but our ages range from late thirties to mid forties.

If interested please email us ASAP; crimson_sky@blueyonder.co.uk

No-Man

Comprising the drum mix of 'The Break-Up For Real', 'Back When You Were Beautiful' and '(bluecoda)', Snapper Music's promotional ep to support the release of the new CD/DVD-A edition of No-Man's acclaimed 'Together We're Stranger' album is now available from the Burning Shed download store at a specially reduced price. Containing downloadable artwork by Carl Glover, the ep is intended as an inexpensive introduction to the band's music.

Porcupine Tree

Steve Wilson contacted Silhobbit.com to say that;

"Please note that Porcupine Tree tickets for Boulder, Toronto, and the 17th May Chicago show are now sold out innit, and tickets are going fast for the other shows (the first two shows the band performed this week in Seattle and Portland were also sell outs).

If you plan to come to any of the other dates on the tour please book your tickets soon to avoid disappointment."

It Bites

Tom 'Orchardboy' Oliver is unable to mix the band's live sound at next month's Gig in the Glen festival in Fife. Rumours that sound engineer Tom Oliver is fronting a "Fruit in Prisons" campaign encouraging inmates to eat healthily have not been denied by the band.

The farmer from Herefordshire is regularly interviewed in BBC radio as he is Britain's leading expert on rare apple breeds and commercial growing.

Coast-proggers Galahad, fresh from their well received RoSFest appearance, have finally gotten around to releasing their new Empires Never Last CD. It also features a few special guests including Karl Groom (Threshold) on guitar, Clive Nolan (Arena, Pendragon) on fake dulcimer and Tina Magenta on vocals and will be officially released on June 11th.

John Dexter Jones recommends...

This week I have been mostly quiet (not Autumn) cos I've lorst my voice to the Goblin of voice theft. He is giving it back in time for gigs with Midge Ure and then Spox Whiskers next month at the Festival of Love and Yorkshire. Just a mention for Wycombe District Council...wankers. Read our Myspace.

Oh and I've been listening to SOMETHING PRETTY Nottingham Band who are opening our Horses Head event in Aylesbury home of Prog on June 23rd. You of course won't be there because you'll be washing dog/laundering arse/talcumming cat/running website/bathing in a wool costume or any of the other excuses you use...BUT YOU GO AND SEE JADIS.. Oh Yes! It's me you don't like isn't it. ME ME ME ME...

At this point, a friendly neighbour rushed in and gave poor John a nice bed bath...

Pendragon

Pendragon's live DVD - Past and Presence is now up for grabs from the bands online shop, along with the spiffing Neo DVD Broadcast. They have some special "Dragon Deals" going, so pop along there now and nab yourself a copy or two. With Christmas coming up, a copy of both DVD will keep Auntie Iris happy!

And while you're there, get Uncle Geoff a copy of the new re-mastered Masquerade Overture, back in stock again. This new version features bonus tracks from the old Good As Gold EP.

The boys are jetting off to the US of A where they'll be joining Galahad big-boys in a CheeseSteak Pizza eating contest, against the American Champion, Joel "www.progrock.com" Craig.

After that, they'll be playing at RoSFest and drinking copious amounts of weak American beer. Go on, pester them for an autograph. They love it really!

Galahad

Some news from GalaStu:

"Empires Never Last" has finally been mastered, all the artwork has been finished and so we're aiming for June release -- this year that is!!! It looks and sounds stunning, well, we think so anyway. It’ll be the heaviest and darkest Galahad album yet.... Don’t be fooled by the intro!

Other good news is that our first album that was released on CD back in 1991, "Nothing Is Written", will also be re-issued shortly as it has been out of press for a good few years now. Good news for all the completists out there who haven’t got a copy. It’s actually interesting to compare the two albums as it shows how the band has changed and evolved over the years. Mostly good wethinks!!! More details on this when we have them.

We also have another gig lined up, this time it will be at a venue called The Thomas Tripp Late and Live in Christchurch, Dorset [England] on 22 July 2007. It’s a great little club which recently hosted a stunning gig by Prog legends Focus, with whom we played at the legendary Whitchurch festival a few years ago.

In the mean time we are off to RoSfest in Philadelphia, USA on Thursday 26 April where we will be playing a full two hour set on Saturday 28 April 2007, which should be a lot of fun. No doubt a few of you will be there, come and say hello!!"

Andromeda

Swedish progmetalers Andromeda's first DVD "Playing Off The Board" is available right now, from Metal Mind records.

The DVD comes in two formats, the first being a straight DVD, featuring the Swedes recorded live in Poland last year, along with a bucketfull of extras. The second version comes in a posher case, and features a double live CD of the gig too!

Magenta

Tigermoth Records are delighted to announce their first full-length release. Magenta "The Singles" will contain 14 tracks consisting of every song that has made up the bands four EP/singles. 8 of these tracks have been specially re-recorded exclusively for this release, and none of them have been available on a full length CD before. Until the official release date of 21st May, the album will only be available at Magenta gigs and, very soon, from the Magenta shop.

Rob Reed explains the decision to release the album: "Most of these songs have been an important part of Magentas live set for several years now and they have evolved as the band has performed them live. We felt it was time to record and release definitive versions with our current line up, which includes Dan Fry on bass. We hope that fans of the band that have our three albums, but have not yet had the chance to hear these songs, will enjoy this equally important aspect of the bands music. However, we hope that those that already have some of this material will appreciate how these songs have evolved over time and that you all love the new versions."

Included on the CD is Night and Day (originally recorded with Annie Haslam) which features a complete lead vocal from Christina for the first time, plus Sunshine Saviour, a new piece adapted from Children of the Sun from the bands first album Revolutions.

The three bonus tracks contain an additional 25 minutes of music including the full 14-minute directors cut of "Pride".
