Knives in Prog
;
"it is not safe to see prog
bands" claims

Silhobbit.com looks at the
increasing rise of stabbings at Prog concerts and asks if more
can be done?

70's
fans took knives to concerts but they wern'tr used. |
Everyone loves knives, but
increasingly they bring misery when they are misused.
For decades a knife has been a
status symbol, a tool, a sex-aid, and weapon of self-defence. A recent spate of
stabbings at prog concerts has brought shame upon the music we all
love.
It is the tenth anniversary of the death of Martin Taylor who was
knifed at a Jadis garden gig, his death shocked everyone who knew
this innocent fan of progressive-rock.
At the time Silhobbit reported this, and We thought that this was a
one-off and whilst fans carried knives to Camel concerts in the
1970's they remained firmly hidden away and rarely used.
"It is not safe to go to prog
concerts, too often I see people stabbing each other during a gig.

Last month an
argument at Kino's
gig in London saw another stabbing in the female toilets after
heated exchanges between to girls jostling for prime position at
the front of the stage.
Their arguments led to the pointless
stabbing of John Mitchel fan 'Tiffany Hughes' who is still suffering in hospital.
Her
family said she was a "bubbly girl who was hoping to be a
pornographic actress" - her dreams now sadly in tatters. Kino
visited the girl in hospital and gave her a signed cd of their
brilliant debut album 'Picture' and some fruit, maybe grapes. |

Mark "fans smuggle weapons
disguised as keys or gnomes " |
Hardly a week goes by without
blood being spilled at a progressive-rock concert.
The recent Marillion Weekend saw another fatal knife attack after a shortage of
'Guardian' newspapers left fans angry.
Keyboardist Mark Kelly
told Silhobbit - "these holiday-camps cater for the type of people
who read 'The Daily Star' or 'The Sun' and so we told the
camp-shop that our fans read broadsheets, they foolishly ignored our
plea for proper newspapers and fighting broke out over the last copy
of 'The Guardian'. Three fans ended up stabbed" he sighs
"We had security, but many knives are disguised as keys or tv
remotes and smuggled in people's arses" adds vocalist Steve Hogarth |

Pendragon's Peter Gee
wants fans to settle their disputes with "good old fashioned
fist fights" he told us
"in my day if I had a problem at a King Crimson gig a strong
right-hook solved a lot and nobody got seriously injured" he adds
Silhobbit.com has
started up a campaign to end this sickening trend which is bringing
our music into disrepute and killing the music, literally.
We've got the backing from many of the stars including Galahad's 'Stu
Nicholson', IQ's Pete Nicholls, and Genesis drummer 'Chester
Thompson'.
All of them support our message and we urge you all to leave your
knives at home. |

Peter Gee "in my day problems were
solved with a punch" |

"The only time we want
to hear the word 'sharp as a Knife' at a prog concert is when It
Bites play their rip-roaring opener 'Kiss like Judas'" says Pete Gee

Know your Knives - John Mitchell's Guide
Jack Knife - single-ended: they have their blade or
blades hinged at one end. There are a few styles of stout
double-ended jack knives.
Multi-Blade - these Knives have a multitude of
blades. They can have as few as three and as many as hundred
or more. Generally at least one of the blades is a special
purpose blade, such as a sheep-foot blade.
Pen Knives - lightweight small double-ended knives.
Most have two or three or more lightweight blades hinged in
both ends. Some of the smallest pen knives are single-ended,
much like tiny jack knives.
Throwing Knife - A 'Thrower' is dedicated to throwing
weapons, whether for sport, natural survival, or
self-defence! These include many ancient weapons and their
modern counterparts.
Butter Knife - a small knife with a dull blade; for
cutting or spreading butter
Swiss Army Knife - any of various penknives with
different blades and tools
Dagger - A short pointed weapon with sharp edges
Bread Knife - a knife used to cut bread
Stanley Knife - every builder, decorater, workman
uses this handy tool.
Kitchen Knife - a knife used to cut up kitchens.
Wife knife - a short knife for discipline usage
Fish knife - a small table knife with a spatula blade
used for eating fish. Or the knife used by the ex Marillion
frontman.
Switchblade - A pocketknife having a spring-operated
blade that opens instantly when a release on the handle is
pressed. Also called switchblade knife, switch knife.
Cheese Knife - a knife used to cut up cheese like
cheddar. |

KNOWING THE LAW
Knife laws vary from state to state, Laws are also
changed or
amended from time to time. This often occurs in a
“knee-jerk” reaction to some problem or
event. Also, courts, in the form of opinions addressing a
given case or dispute, interpret
these laws. Each "interpretation" introduces another change
or perhaps refinement to the
law. Accordingly, it would be an ongoing task to maintain an
up-to-date reference of all
American jurisdictions as specifically related to knives.
The individual interested in learning about the laws
involving or pertaining to knives
in a given state, or perhaps more importantly, in avoiding
difficulty with the laws, should
turn to the state statutes or legislative enactments, and in
particular, those dealing with crimes.
You may find that for a given state this would be described
or referred to as the
Penal Code or Crimes Code. Within this Code, you will likely
find laws regarding knives
under any of the following headings:
Prohibited Weapons
-- Typically there will be a statute defining listing
various
weapons which are prohibited. As to knives, there may be
specific size/blade length
limitations. Often times there will be prohibitions against
"dirks or daggers." Switchblades
or other knives, the blade of which is exposed by gravity or
mechanical
action, are frequently prohibited.
Possessing Instruments of Crime --
This type of law deals with the possession of
an instrument not otherwise illegal but possessed under
circumstances indicating
intent to employ the instrument for criminal purposes. For
example, a 12-inch
butcher knife would be commonplace and unquestionably legal
in a butcher shop or
meat packing plant, but might be questionable in the
proverbial dark alley at 3:00
o'clock a.m. This type of law is sometimes found under the
heading of "inchoate
crimes."
Possession of a weapon in a prohibited area
-- In most states, it is a crime to
possess a knife on school grounds. In some instances,
exceptions are made for
small pocketknives. It is also a crime in many states to
possess a weapon to
include a knife in a court facility or some other government
buildings. |
