Fire In The South

Bull & Gate, Kentish Town
London

19th February 2006

When I heard that the excellent Fire in the South were playing the Bull and Gate in Kentish Town, land of my Fathers, I knew that I just had to be there. And when the band's keyboard maestro Paul Wiffen said we were on the guest list, we packed our stuff and headed up the M1.

We got to the venue with barely an hour to spare. So plenty of time for a drink and a quick chat to the band before they hit the stage. Tonight's performance was a special one for the band because it was just about the first time that they had managed to get all seven of them together in one place at the same time concurrently!

So after a couple of beers, we steamed through the toilets and into the venue proper just as the band were setting their gear up. We worked our way to the front to make sure that we had a good enough view of the gig.

I think there must have been a problem with the intro tape, as singer / bass player Stoney growled "I'm angry tonight!" into the mic as the band kicked off with the opener England.

People have described Fire In The South as the new Pink Floyd, and in my eyes and ears that is a good and justified description! Stoney's vocals are mopre than reminiscient of our Rog's, whilst the twin guitars of Danny Sykes and Martyn "with a Y" combine well with Paul's effervescent keyboard sounds and Patch Hannan's (formerly of indie darlings The Sundays) subtle yet powerful drumming. The band stand with two feet firmly planted in the Pink Floyd sound, with another lodged in the Roger Waters solo camp. It's a wonderful mix and will give fans of both era's a delightful taste of what might have been if Waters and Gilmour hadn't acted like 9 year olds in a playground fight over a bag of Ready Salted crisps!

Other tracks performed tonight were What Do You Want From Me? featuring the delicious backing singers Vanessa'n'Honey, Father, Overture, Comfort and the rousing set-closing End Of Time (to be on our Podcast soon!).

Forget the paper talk of a Pink Floyd re-union, we here at Silhobbit recommend that you all get to see Fire In The South as soon as you can. You won't regret it.
