Invisible Touch

The Boat Race
Cambridge

29th April 2000

Hmmm, Cambridge. One of the spiritual homes of prog, if I'm not mistaken. Also the home of a pub called "The Boat Race". And another, bigger, flashier, better know one (apparently) called "The Boat House". So, after being given five different sets of directions to the "Boat House" and lots of "The Boat Race, You've missed it" or "It's in London, mate" or "Oooh, It's not actually here, it's between Cambridge and Oxford. Ha ha ha ha", we eventually found the "Boat Race".

Unfortunately, Invisible Touch had already hit the stage, probably to rapturous applause, and probably did some stonking 70's tracks. Which is not to say that we missed ALL the good stuff. Sure, we had to stand through Jaysus He Knows Me and bLand of Confusion, but we also got a decent smattering of Pure Prog covers from this excellent band. Well, they do play for a staggering two and a half hours.

Homeboy Dave Woodward (age 15, guitar) plays a mean guitar, and this would’ve shone though on Horizons, but they didn’t play it. They also didn’t launch into Suppers Ready, though As Sure as Eggs is Eggs (Aching Mens Feet) is part of their medley. Mick, the singer, is far more a Phil than a Peter, and Phil Durga Duke (TAFKAH) on drums hits them skins like she means it, especially on the well performed Home By The Sea / Second Home By The Sea.

Haha ha ooooh

They encored with the inevitable Invisible Trough, then the highlight for me and a lot of the crowd, The Knife and the show stopping I Know What I Like. I know what I like and I like prog with valves on it.

Now, if only we could see them doing Hogweed on stage. The song, I mean.

Silhobbit Verdict.

Not as totally Gabriel as ReGenesis,
but their set is more varied.
Go see them.
You won't be disappointed.
Unless  you hate Genesis, that is.
Or like Hawaiian Shirts
and
shouting out
“Grendel”
!

"We are the road crew"

"Stop fuckin shouting for Grendel!"

"Tum de dum de dum, Hi ho tiddley pom"
